Pork Souvlaki

Pork Souvlaki, just the name makes me crave for it! Souvlaki is a delicious Greek fast food that has gained immense popularity in other countries as well in the past few years. Souvlaki can be made with variety of meats like lamb, beef, chicken and even fish. As the name suggests, Pork Souvlaki consists of small chunks of marinated pork meat grilled on a skewer.

What ingredients do you need to make Pork Souvlaki?

800 gm pork tenderloin or pork neck (boneless) cut in 2 cm chunks

100 ml olive oil

juice of 1/2 lemon

1 tbsp vinegar

1 tbsp dried oregano

1 tsp honey

8 wooden skewers

salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

INGREDIENTS Pork Souvlaki

How to make Pork Souvlaki?

Step 1

Cut the pork into 2 cm pieces. This is done so that later it is easier to thread the meat onto skewers. Therefore it is important that all the pieces of the pork you cut are of similar size.

Step 2

Take the pork pieces, olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, honey,  salt and pepper and place them in a large bowl. Use your hands to mix really well, cover with plastic wrap and put in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Step 3

In the meantime take out your skewers, if you are using wooden skewers you may need to cut the wooden skewers to fit your griddle pan, In this recipe we have used metal skewers.

Cooking tip: Soak the wooden skewers in water for 10 minutes before using, it will prevent the skewers from burning.

Step 4

Now you are ready to skewer your pork. Thread about 8 pieces of pork on each skewer.

Step 5

Preheat a grill or griddle pan on a high heat. Cook the pork skewers for about 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until nicely coloured and cooked through.

What can you eat Pork Souvlaki with?

You can enjoy pork souvlaki in a variety of way. Enjoy the souvlaki by itself, or pair it with pita bread, potatoes, lemon and other dips or sauces such as Tzatziki or Roasted Baba Ganoush dip.

I like serving them with pita bread. If you want to do the same, you can warm up the pita breads, while the pork is cooking.

Optional | Instructions for Pork souvlaki with Pita bread & Tzatziki sauce

Preheat the oven to 250ºC. Use a cooking brush to oil the pita breads on both sides and season with salt and oregano. Place a large oven tray (upside down) at the bottom of the oven and place the pita breads on top of the tray. Bake for 1-2 minutes and they are ready.

To serve the pork souvlaki (skewers), slice 2 red onions and place on a plate. Top with the pork skewers, drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil and a good squeeze of lemon juice.

Serve while the pita bread is still warm. Take one skewer and a pita bread in one hand. Place the skewer in the middle of the pita bread and, then with your hand wrap it up with the bread like a sandwich and with the other hand pull the skewer away so that the pork pieces are left in the pita bread, then add tzatziki sauce and salad. You will love the combination. Enjoy!
